First Choice Health Centers is proud to introduce our new Chief Medical Officer, Vasanth Kainkaryam, MD, MSHI, FAAP, FACP. Dr. Kainkaryam is a board certified Internist and Pediatrician, specializing in the care of individuals of all ages, from newborn through adulthood. He was formerly the Medical Director of the Hartford HealthCare Health Center, a primary care practice resulting from a collaboration between Hartford HealthCare and Boston-based Iora Health, bringing a transformative and innovative value-based model of care to Hartford.
He completed his undergraduate degree in the Biological Sciences and in Linguistics at Cornell University and went on to pursue his M.D. at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He subsequently trained at Baystate Medical Center/Western Campus of Tufts University School of Medicine in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, and went on to pursuing a degree in Medical Informatics from Northwestern University, focusing on Health Administration Informatics.
He has special interests in shared medical appointments, innovative health care delivery models, patient education, deaf health, adult survivors of childhood illnesses, and especially the application of technology in health care delivery. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Quinnipiac University Frank H. Netter School of Medicine as well as Assistant Professor of Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at UConn School of Medicine School.
In his prior practice he was instrumental in advancing the use of electronic patient based communications and has experience in telemedicine which First Choice Health Centers is developing through our relationship with the Provider Transformation Network/CHCACT. He has teaching affiliations with area residency training programs and as such will be developing on-site provider residency programs. He will also assist the Center in developing research opportunities that will benefit the patients that we serve with access to newer medicines, treatments and technologies.
In his spare time, he enjoys writing (and just published his first book), loves traveling the world, learning about different cultures and languages, listening to Indian classical music, and has a passion for baking mini-cupcakes. He speaks Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, French, has basic conversational proficiency in American Sign Language, and has studied Latin as well.
